What is a Christian?

[Bible references on this web-site are written in the following form: Book name. chapter: verse e.g. Genesis. 1:1]

Are you a Christian?

Do you go to church regularly but never think about Christian things except when you are in church? Maybe you only go to Church for Christenings (Baptisms), weddings, or funerals. Doing these things does not make you a Christian.

Being brought up in a Christian home doesn’t make you a Christian, But may teach you what real Christians are like.

Going to church and/or Sunday school doesn’t make you a Christian either but can help you to understand what Christianity is all about.

Being a ‘good’ person and helping others may make you feel nice inside, and even be proud of what you do, and be popular because of your achievements whether they are large or small, but that doesn’t make you a Christian either.

Being baptised as a baby, or confirmed in a church denomination can not make you a Christian there are many people all over the world who are like this but they do not care about Christ.

Believing in God doesn’t make you a Christian. The devil also believes in God, as do his followers.

So what is a Christian?

  • A Christian is a person who has made a lifetime commitment to follow the teaching of the Lord Jesus Christ and believes that he is the Son of God and the promised Saviour of the Bible accounts.

  • A Christian has asked him to reveal himself to them as Saviour and believes that Jesus Christ died on the cross, was buried in a tomb and rose again three days later.

  • A Christian has a personal relationship with God the Father through the Work of Jesus on the Cross, and is empowered by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is his messenger who guides Christians in every aspect of life.
